Department of Neurosciences and Psychiatry - Summer Camps

Rocket Neurosciences Laboratory Summer camp (on-campus)

Join the Departments of Neurosciences and Psychiatry and Biological Sciences for our on-campus Rocket Neurosciences Summer Camp to discover what it’s like to be a neuroscientist while engaging in fun, hands-on activities and meeting other high school students interested in understanding how the brain works!

Our highly interactive camp(s) will include tutorials and laboratory activities. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with faculty and current students in the neurosciences program and gain hands-on experience in Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ research laboratories.Ìý

This year students have the opportunity to participate in one or two weeks of tutorials and laboratory activities on Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Health Science Campus and/or Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Main Campus.Ìý It is ideal for students to attend both weeks of camp, however students can attend either week and still gain valuable knowledge and skills.

Ideal camp for high school students entering grades 10, 11, or 12.

WEEK 1 - Introduction to the Neuroscience Laboratory

Will have hands-on laboratory experience, tutorials, demonstrations and meet-the-researcher networking will explore the following:

  • Introduction to laboratory concepts: Tools to study the brain
  • Laboratory health and safety
  • Biochemistry of DNA, RNA and protein
  • Neuroanatomy: what is the brain made of?
  • Imaging the brain: What is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)?
  • Understanding how the brain influences behavior
  • How to build a microscope

WEEK 2:Ìý Neurons in Action

Will have hands-on laboratory experience, tutorials, demonstrations and meet-the-researcher networking. We will explore how neurons signal and communicate within neural circuits to drive animal behavior through the following activities:

  • Learn basic principles of bio-electricity and circuits that underpin neuronal communication
  • Record the electrical activity of neurons.
  • Explore how neurons respond to sensory and reflex stimulation.
  • Record and manipulate signaling between neurons and muscles.
  • Gain first-hand experience with the cutting-edge optical techniques that are pushing back the boundaries of today’s neuroscience research
